Senegal's Dakar Fashion Week: The catwalk in a baobab forest

Image
Organisers of this year's Dakar Fashion Week have a message for the world: sustainability is in style. Forced by coronavirus restrictions to hold the show outside, models emerged beside the trunk of an ancient baobab tree to stride down the catwalk. The event, held at the weekend in Senegal's capital with the theme of environmental responsibility, featured 20 designers whose collections - both those on the runway and sold in boutiques - have long been handmade on the continent rather than mass produced in factories. "A lot of the designers had already been doing 'slow fashion' but they didn't know it," said Adama Ndiaye, founder of Dakar Fashion Week and the designer behind Adama Paris. "It's made here and it's not made in huge quantities. We were so ashamed of that for years but now we are proud of it. This is luxury." In what has become known as "fast fashion", consumers, most notably in the West, are buying and discarding c

Skintelligence: how China’s growing trend is influencing skincare

Image
This is thanks, in part, to the rise in consumer interest toward ingredient intelligence. In China, this growing “skintelligence” has led to an increase in demand for skin care and personal care products that have transparent branding toward their ingredients, utilize high-quality ingredients, and aim to educate the user rather than convince them that product will garner a specific result. Defining skintelligence and skintillectualism Skintelligence—or, “skintillectualism”—has led to a change in the way global consumers find new products, and companies are having to adjust to that change in order to gain consumer trust. Where skin care companies used to advertise and market their products according to function (anti-aging, moisturizing, or brightening, for example), they now have to focus on marketing to consumers that know exactly what they’re looking for.  Part of this is due to the ease of access to information that the internet provides. Venice full of water

Image
The floating city of Venice , one of the most extraordinary cities in the world was built on 118 islands in the middle of the Venetian Lagoon at the head of the Adriatic Sea in Northern Italy. ... It seems impossible for such a grand city to be floating in a lagoon of water , reeds and marshland. When we say "driving in Venice ", what we really mean is "driving around Venice " because there are no cars allowed in the city at all. With an intricate network of canals, there's no room for passenger cars , so park your car and do all of your sightseeing in downtown Venice on foot. The water in Venice is piped in from the mainland. The water originates from an area famous for bottled water found 30 km from Venice . And the central part of it begins from underground wells 300 meters deep, completely protected from human activities.
